How to stop your fear of flying and start your journey feeling relaxed

If you have a fear of flying, you know only too well the debilitating impact this can have on your life. For some, it will be the mental and physical suffering you have to deal with each time you go on holiday or a business trip, whilst those around you seem unconcerned.

For some, the prospect of flying can be so bad that it actually puts a stop of any business travel or family holidays that can’t be reached by land or sea. Your fear can even impact your relationships with those closest to you, each time the prospect of travel comes up.

When you mention your fears to other people, you often hear the standard response, ‘oh well it’s the safest form of transport’, or ‘just relax and enjoy it’ and of course, this doesn’t make things any easier!

How your fear of flying affects you

If you decide to fight through the anxiety and fears with no choice but to board the plane, you’ll know only too well the apprehension and stress that builds in the days leading up to your journey. Then once at the airport more anxiety with exaggerated worries, fearing the worst which can be accompanied by physical symptoms including:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • An increase in heart rate and blood pressure
  • Sweaty palms, forehead or underarms
  • Heart palpitations
  • Erratic breathing
  • Muscle tension
  • Stomach cramps

You may even be experiencing panic attacks and not sleeping for days before your flight with endless thoughts of what might happen on the journey.

Why do I have these fears of flying when others don’t?

The fear response to flying is created by negative templates stored in your sub-conscious mind. You’re not born with a fear of travelling on a plane, it is a learnt response built from misconceptions about flying.

You may have learned the phobic response from your family, friends or colleagues or it may have been a traumatic incident which triggered your fear and the anxiety which is stored deep within your primitive anxious mind. It keeps you on red alert triggering these feelings of fear and anxiety every time the topic of flying comes up.

The problem is, the more we think about the issue and the fear, the more we amplify this in our primitive anxious mind, and this is a very irrational mind which makes you worry about all aspects of your journey even more.
