What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is what we feel when we are worried, tense or afraid – particularly about things that are about to happen, or which we think could happen in the future. Anxiety is a natural human response when we perceive that we are under threat. It can be experienced through our thoughts, emotional feelings and physical sensations. It’s useful when we’re in danger, but when we’re not and we become overwhelmed by excessive anxious thoughts, worries, fears and even panic attacks, anxiety can become detrimental to your quality of life. It means you can find it difficult to concentrate, relax and can impact your emotional and physical well-being.

Some of the emotional symptoms can include, problems sleeping, unable to concentrate, irritability, sense of dread, fearing the worst, feeling out of control, obsessively worrying about the future and past, ruminating on past situations and experiences, feeling tearful or having repetitive thoughts. Physical symptoms can include stomach pains or churning feelings, headaches and migraines, dizziness, muscular tension, raised blood pressure, hot flushes, teeth grinding, nausea, changes in sex drive and panic attacks.

How Hypnotherapy helps with anxiety

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you take control and get your life back on track. Using a modern research-based combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis, I’ll help you focus on how you want things to be, we won’t be dwelling on problems of the past, but instead will be focusing on how you want things to be in your future. As you begin to think and express yourself more positively, it will help reduce your anxiety. Using brain-based therapy will also help you understand how our brains and thoughts create feelings of anxiety, which will help you see things from a different perspective.

Sessions are consolidated with hypnotherapy which helps bring about therapeutic change at a subconscious level to your behavioural responses to everyday life. I’ll use guided relaxation techniques which allow your mind to become calm and focused on finding positive solutions to help you move forwards. We’ll work together each week using a tailored programme designed to build new helpful patterns of behaviour that helps you feel better and puts you back in control again.

Sleep & Insomnia

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia and sleep issues are very common and affect around one in three people in the UK. You may find yourself having difficulty getting to sleep or feel awake for long periods before going back to sleep or indeed wake up in the middle of the night with no hope of being able to sleep again that night. Persistent insomnia can leave you feeling tired and frustrated impacting your health, motivation and performance at work or during your day to day life. It can even reduce your problem-solving skills and reduce your ability to cope with stressful situations. Lack of sleep has also been linked to weight gain and reduced immunity.

It can be difficult to find the root cause of insomnia, but it can often be linked to a number of factors including anxiety and stress, poor sleep routine and environment, lifestyle factors such as drinking alcohol, taking drugs as well as stimulants such as nicotine and caffeine. Physical and mental health conditions can also have an impact on sleeping patterns. As we sleep our bodies repairs and restores itself, so good sleep is very important. At night when we dream the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep is vital for memory and learning, making sense of the day. The REM phase also replenishes helpful hormones including serotonin which makes us feel good and gives us a boost.

How Hypnotherapy helps with insomnia and sleep

Anxiety and stress is a common cause of insomnia. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you reduce your general levels of anxiety helping you calm your thoughts at night, helping you to relax and change your thought patterns so that you are no longer trapped in that cycle of negative thinking or rumination. As you change the way you think, you’ll find it easier to relax and drift off into a deep sleep every night. You’ll receive a free relaxation CD or mp3 which will support the process. You’ll begin to feel more energised and refreshed each day.

Depression and Low Mood

What is Depression?

Depression can leave you feeling like you’re stuck under a dark cloud which can be quite isolating, a low mood which often lasts a long time and affects your day to day life. Mild depression doesn’t stop you leading a normal life but makes everything an effort and you lack sense of purpose. More severe depression can be life threatening because it can make you feel like giving up completely.

Depression can leave you feeling unable to cope with negative feelings causing you to put life on hold and withdraw from the outside world. It takes away your confidence and ability to feel in control making rational decisions instead becoming focused on negative thoughts and forecasting the worst case scenarios, often leaving you feeling hopeless and unable to see a way out.

How Hypnotherapy helps with depression

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you to break free from the negative cycle of depression, giving you tools and techniques you can use to feel better and boost your serotonin levels naturally. We’ll work together weekly using a combination of solution focused psychotherapy and hypnosis techniques. We avoid problem talk, which in itself can be harmful, instead, we’ll focus on how you want things to be, rather than dwelling on negative past problems. I’ll also help you understand how our brains create depression and how this influences your behaviours and feelings which supports you in taking small steps to think differently.

Sessions are consolidated with hypnotherapy which helps bring about therapeutic change at a subconscious level using guided relaxation techniques allowing your mind to become calmer, so you can focus on moving forwards in life. Your tailored programme will be designed to build new helpful patterns of behaviour that helps you feel more positive about the future.

What is stress?

Stress is a response we experience which can either help you or hinder you depending on your ability to cope. It can motivate you to perform and be at your best when needed, boosting your energy, but it becomes a problem and hinders you when you have been under excessive or prolonged periods of pressure. The symptoms you experience can vary depending on whether you feel able to cope with the pressures facing you. If you feel unable to cope, then, you’ll begin to experience an adverse reaction to these pressures. Stress is very common these days, a symptom of modern life and is now the most common cause of long-term absence from work. It can be very debilitating and prevent you from achieving your potential professionally and personally. Prolonged stress can cause further mental and/ or physical health issues.

Psychological symptoms can include an inability to concentrate or make simple decisions, memory lapses, becoming rather vague or easily distracted, excessive worrying or thinking negatively. Emotional symptoms can include tearfulness, mood swings, irritability, being sensitive to criticism, defensive or frustrated. Physical signs include aches and pains, muscle tension, teeth grinding, frequent colds or infections, allergies or skin irritations, weight loss or gain, dizziness or palpitations.

How Hypnotherapy helps with stress

Hypnotherapy can help you learn to respond in more constructive ways to your stress triggers, and gain real and lasting relief

Sometimes it’s not as simple as removing the cause of pressure of source of challenges facing you. It may be work pressures or family life causing you stress which cannot be avoided. However, hypnotherapy can help you deal with these situations, so you can cope better each day. Often, it’s not the situation you face that causes the stress, it’s your response to it.

We’ll work together using Solution Focused techniques, which helps you formulate a better way of coping with your situation and daily life. Focusing and visualising your preferred future helps your sub-conscious mind create a positive template to work with. Then, by responding to external pressures in a calmer, more positive way, stress-related symptoms often improve. As you begin to think differently, you’ll feel better and feel more able to enjoy life.

Confidence & Self-Esteem

What is confidence?

Confidence is a state of mind, having belief and faith in yourself, your abilities, talents and strengths. When you feel confident, it comes from within and you accept yourself for who you are. You may well have already achieved a lot in your life, qualifications, career experience, raised a family or perhaps built a successful business, but this does not mean you are confident. Even successful people need help with confidence issues. Even very successful people seek help with confidence issues.

Low self-confidence can hold you back from developing and achieving your true potential both professionally and personally. It also affects your relationships with others and can leave your worrying and fearing other people’s perceptions and thoughts about you and your performance. You may be a perfectionist. If you lack confidence, you may seek regular reassurance from colleagues or friends and perhaps only focus on perceived criticism ignoring any praise or good feedback. These behaviours can be restricting and can affect how you enjoy life and see the world.

How Hypnotherapy helps with confidence

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you become more confident, happier and positive. We’ll help by identifying your strengths and focus on what you can do, rather than what you can’t. Solution Focused techniques then help you visualise how things will be when you are more confident, what would your goals be? You’ll then be supported to take small steps to step outside of your comfort zone and help you identify what has gone well each week. Together we’ll build on each success so that you feel more able to engage in work, social situations or feel more able to work towards and achieve your goals without worry or fear.

What is Anger?

Anger usually happens as a result of feeling frustrated, insulted, deceived or even under attack. It triggers a physical reaction in your body, you mind becomes focused on these potential threats, adrenaline and stress hormones are pumped around your body and you respond by getting ready to fight or run.

For some people these feelings soon pass, however for some it can become a difficult emotion to control. Failing to manage anger effectively can lead to mental and physical health problems. You may find your anger management issues are affecting your relationships, your work or even your self-esteem.

How Hypnotherapy helps with Anger Management

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you take control of your negative thoughts and support you in developing more effective coping strategies. We’ll work together to find solutions to help you react to situations in more appropriate and beneficial way for your well-being. During hypnosis, using guided imagery we will consolidate this work by building positive behavioural templates and rehearse remaining calm in situations which have previously caused anger, helping you to manage your emotional states, increasing your confidence and self-worth.

Addictions and stop smoking

What is Addiction?

Addiction is very common, according to the charity Action on Addiction, 1 in 3 people are addicted to something. When you have an addiction, it is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you. We most commonly associate addictions with smoking, gambling, drugs and alcohol but addictive behaviour can come in many forms, perhaps mobile phones, working and shopping for example and all these behaviours share similarities, regardless of the substance or behaviour involved. Addictions can not only harm your health but can often have an impact on those around you affecting personal relationships, work and the overall quality of your life.

How can hypnotherapy help with addictive habits?

Any need or habit you have and feel it to be getting out of control is at risk of becoming an addiction. The sooner that you act, the easier it is to overcome. Whilst you need the motivation and desire to change, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) can help the you with the process of changing and stopping addictive behaviours. We’ll work together to help you to understand and reduce your cravings and desires. It can also give you an awareness of the triggers or underlying reasons for your reliance to give you back control.

Weight Management

Managing your weight

When you’ve decided its time to lose weight, you often know what needs to happen to begin the process, but it’s not always that easy to start and maintain it. We all have busy lives, it’s difficult to find time to buy and prepare new foods from scratch, let alone find time to work out or suddenly become more active every day.

If you’re having feelings of low self-esteem this could lead you to self-sabotage your good intentions. You may have unhelpful beliefs around food, such as needing to eat everything on your plate, or you might have unhelpful habits, such as snacking whilst preparing children’s meals or eating more than is needed to make yourself feel happier.

How Hypnotherapy helps with weight management

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you find the motivation for making the necessary changes to lose weight. It isn’t a magic wand. You won’t be able to lose weight unless you change what you eat or take more exercise, preferably both. It is a modern research-based combination of psychotherapy techniques and hypnosis, aimed at encouraging you to focus on how you want things to be, helping you feel confident about your body and change your negative thoughts about eating. We don’t dwell on past problems, but instead help you to visualise your preferred future. There’s a huge difference between saying ‘I don’t want to binge on a whole bar of chocolate’ and ‘I am going to eat healthy and nutritious food’.

Hypnotherapy can help you address the underlying stresses that get in the way of you making appropriate choices around food and exercise. However, it can only help if you are prepared to do something different. If you’re motivated and ready for change be prepared for steady, sustainable weight loss, rather than a quick fix.

Fears & Phobias

What is a phobia?

A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something, which is excessive in comparison to the level of threat posed by the situation or object triggering it. If you’re able to manage your life around your phobia or fear it is rarely a problem, but if you have a fear of flying, then long distance travel is out of the question. For those experiencing a phobia, it can trigger overwhelming physical and emotional symptoms which can limit enjoyment of life and create additional anxieties and stress.

How Hypnotherapy helps you overcome phobias and fears

Phobias are created by negative templates stored in your sub-conscious mind. You may have learned the phobic response from your family, or it may have been a traumatic incident which triggered your phobia. In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we do not use aversion techniques, instead we use highly effective NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) techniques which safely removes the phobic response template and creates a new positive template for how you want to react in the future.

Motivation & Performance

What is motivation?

Do you have a goal you want to achieve? Maybe you want to reach a high level of fitness, achieve a sporting goal, lose weight or become a better public speaker. Motivation is the difference between having a goal and having the desire to achieve it. When you’re motivated, you take action, lack of motivation means you don’t have the desire to take those steps, you may feel overwhelmed, too much to do and too little time. Perhaps you put things off and procrastinate. These behaviours can lead to frustration, low self-esteem and negative thinking which can prevent you from moving forwards and achieving your goals.

How Hypnotherapy helps motivation and performance

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps with motivation by identify your underlying reasons for wanting to achieve your goal – what are the benefits, what will you achieve from it. Solution Focused techniques then help you identify your plan and your goals, so you can take small steps towards your overall aim. If you’re looking to enhance your performance we use a technique called an inner rehearsal, where the brain practices the actions and becomes familiar with the desired goal and outcome and is able to move you towards it. We avoid talking about what might be holding you back, instead we focus on what you need to do next. Taking one small step generates a feeling of achievement, helping to motivate you to take the next step, so you feel rewarded, energised and more positive as you move forwards.

What is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?

If you or someone you know suffers from IBS, you’ll understand how it can have a significant impact on the quality of life and how it creates considerable anxiety and stress. Many clients tell me not only about the physical symptoms such as bloating, cramping, constipation and diarrhoea, but also how it impacts their daily activities affecting all aspect from relationships, work, social and travel activities.

If you suffer from IBS, you may know that there is no known cause of IBS and doctors diagnose it by ruling out what it isn’t. The chemical nature of stress, worry or anxiety makes the symptoms of IBS even worse. There appear to be no generally effective treatments. Drugs either work for a limited time, only on some individuals or are too expensive. The good news is that hypnotherapy, has been shown to help alleviate symptoms considerably.

How can hypnotherapy help with IBS?

Hypnotherapy can help by lowering the general levels of stress and anxiety, which helps lower the perception of pain and discomfort (which is related to anxiety) which can lead to improvements in the frequency and intensity of symptoms. The approach also helps you develop strategies to effectively deal with stress and anxiety for longer-term improvements.

Solution Focused techniques also help you gain control of life again, helping you build confidence and self-esteem, so you feel more able to be more spontaneous and enjoy everyday activities. Since 2008, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has suggested Hypnotherapy as a suitable intervention for IBS. In February 2008 the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), which gives guidance to the NHS on effective treatments, published guidance for GPs and consultants saying there was good evidence that hypnotherapy was an effective IBS treatment and that it could be recommended for chronic IBS.

IBS is still regarded as a medical condition, if you think you might have IBS then please visit your GP first to get their diagnosis and advice. Once you have established with the doctor that it is IBS and believe that hypnotherapy could help you then please get in touch to arrange an initial consultation.

Pain Management

What is pain management?

When we feel pain, it’s our natural survival mechanism kicking in, telling us that we’ve been damaged so we can act fast. Acute pain typically occurs after an injury or illness, and the pain reduces and eventually resolves once the injury has healed. Without this reaction and useful purpose our survival would be threatened. However, when pain serves no useful purpose and becomes chronic and persistent, it becomes exhausting and can affect you physically and emotionally often leading to stress, insomnia and anxiety. Daily activities become difficult and overwhelming and means you’re unable to enjoy life as you used to.

How can hypnotherapy help with pain management?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you reduce your general levels of anxiety by helping focus on how you want things to be, we won’t be dwelling on problems of the past, but instead will be focusing on how you want things to be in your future. As you begin to think and express yourself more positively, it will help reduce your anxiety, as you feel calmer and less anxious it can help alter the brain’s perception of the pain message. Sessions are consolidated with hypnotherapy which helps bring about therapeutic change at a subconscious level to help turn down the pain intensity and enable the body’s natural pain control mechanism.
